Skip James' keening vocal style and unique three-finger picking style were among the first Delta blues recorded. Nehemiah Curtis James also worked as a levee builder, sharecropper and whiskey bootlegger in Mississippi in the 1920s. He was born in Bentonia, Miss., in 1902. Before picking up guitar, he played the organ. James was unknown until his highly idiosyncratic song "I'm So Glad" was covered by Cream in the late 1960s. He died in Philadelphia in 1969.
