Brown's Surgery a Success

Prognosis good for Godfather of Soul

James Brown, 71, underwent surgery to treat his recently diagnosed prostate cancer yesterday, and his prognosis is good. "We expect a full recovery," said Dr. James Bennett. "With proper follow-up and care, we can also expect a full cure."

Brown was able to walk out of Atlanta's Midtown Urology Surgical Center later the same day. He will be in recovery for three weeks.

When announcing his diagnosis last Friday, the performer had said, "I have overcome a lot of things in my life. I will overcome this as well."

Brown's updated autobiography, James Brown: The Godfather of Soul -- co-authored by, among others, Rev. Al Sharpton -- is due next month. The performer wrapped up a two-week Canadian tour on Thursday, and plans a tour of Asia and Australia in early 2005.
